CRANDON, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Governor Tony Evers is allocating $15 million to Wisconsin school districts to provide mental health support for students. It’s part of his “Get Kids Ahead” initiative, and it comes at a time when roughly a third of U.S. high school students say they’ve recently experienced poor mental health.
Larry Palubicki is the district administrator for the School District of Crandon. He says more and more students need mental health services in the wake of the pandemic. “As school districts, we knew there could be issues, but not fully equipped or prepared how deep some of those issues were.”
Crandon will receive about $21,000 through the “Get Kids Ahead” initiative. Palubicki says the money will be used to continue offering mental health services the school already provides. He’d like to bring more people on board to help with the issue, but in rural areas like Crandon, that’s not always easy. “The problem is finding qualified people who can come into the school.”
Cradon is trying to partner with local community clinics to bring more counselors into the schools.
