We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
You best know them by this…….from 1971
The trio of Tony Ashton (keyboards & vocals), Kim Gardner (bass) and Roy Dyke (drums) augmented by guitarist Mick Liber and hornmen John Mumford and Dave Caswell could not follow up that hit but did release another album, “What A Bloody Long Day It’s Been” in 1972.
Some critics said they meandered too much and didn’t pick a style. And while that’s true, it also makes their recordings a bit more interesting than the usual. This album has some nice stuff on it….from the jazzy “The Falling Song” to the bluesy “I’m Going To A Place”, to the Dylanesque title track. They’ll also get you going with “The Old Rock & Roll Boogie Woogie”.
Tony Ashton was a talented guy that doesnt get talked enough in the conversations of early 70’s British music.
While this was the last album for the group…they did contribute (along with Deep Purple’s Jon Lord) on the soundtrack for the movie “The Last Rebel” which starred Joe Namath in 1973!
This probably missed your radar in 1972,,,you can catch up now.
