WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — On Tuesday the Marathon County Board of Supervisors voted to name Kurt Gibbs as chairman.
The vote was contested, as some called for new leadership. District 23 Supervisor David Baker was also nominated for the post. The final vote was 24-13 in favor of Gibbs, with District 11 vacant as the board waits to see if the results of their election will be challenged in court.
Supervisor Craig McEwen was once again elected as Vice-Chair.
Also during Tuesday’s organizational meeting, the board voted to dissolve the Diversity Affairs Commission. The nine-member commission was behind the crafting of the “Community for All” resolution during the spring and summer of 2021, which was ultimately rejected after an 18-18 tie vote.

The matter caused divisive debate in all areas of the county which drew national attention including two articles in the New York Times. Those in favor of the measure called it a statement that would help the county attract and retain job-seekers while giving a message of inclusion. Those against said it was a way of pushing left-wing policies.
