STEVENS POINT, Wis. – (UWSP-WSAU) The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (20-4, 11-3) may not have been the home team on the scoreboard, but the Pointers belted eight home runs in the friendly confines of Zimmermann Field in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout (15-11, 10-6) to claim the series. UWSP won the opening game, 11-5, before clubbing six long balls in a 16-6 game two win.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had two of UWSP’s home runs with four hits, four RBI and three runs scored on the day. Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) also hit a long ball among his four hits on the day. He had three RBI and scored five times.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) also collected four hits with three runs scored and an RBI. Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) had three hits, including his first home run as a Pointer. Aaron Simmons (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) hit his team-leading ninth home run.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) started game one and struck out three in 4.2 innings. Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) also recorded three strikeouts in 1.1 frames. Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) went the final 3.0 with four strikeouts for his first career save.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out five in the game two start going 4-plus innings. Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) had three strikeouts in 2.0 hitless frames to pick up the win.
UWSP will host UW-Eau Claire for a four-game weekend series beginning on Saturday (April 23). First pitch at Zimmermann Field is set for 12;00 p.m.
The UW-Stevens Point softball team (15-11, 0-4) dropped both games of a league doubleheader at UW-Whitewater (12-12, 5-5) on Tuesday. UWSP fell in five innings, 8-0, in game one before a 7-3 defeat in game two.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) had two of UWSP’s three RBI on the day. Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had the other and went 3-for-3 in game two. Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) and Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) had two hits apiece, both in game two.
UWSP’s rescheduled home games against UW-Platteville scheduled for Wednesday (April 20) have been postponed. The Pointers will next head to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (April 23) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
