PLOVER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – The Stevens Point Curling Club is hosting the 2022 Junior National Championships and officials expect tourism to have a positive impact on the economy.
This is the second season the Sentry Curling Center has been open, and is now hosting its first national tournament.
The Junior National Championship is the largest under 21 competition and Stevens Point Director of Community and Economic Development Ryan Kernosky said this event will boost the area’s economy. “I would say several hundred thousand (dollars),” Kernosky said. “Not just in hotel expenses but in the expenses in being a tourist in this community.”
The tournament started Saturday, April 23rd, and will continue until next Saturday, April 30th. That is several nights of travelers staying within Portage County.
“We expect 700 room nights within in the greater Stevens Point-Plover area which means those are people coming to this community,” Kernosky said. “Going to our restaurants, our bars, our super clubs.” Kerbosky said a large community effort was put into the curling center. At the previous location the center was not eligible to host national tournaments.
The Village of Plover donated the land and the city of Stevens Point is leasing the land for one dollar a year.
