We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
We have said before that the 70’s explosion of “fusion jazz” was not for everyone. And today’s album is a perfect example. “I Sing The Body Electric”, the second LP from the group Weather Report, featured a new drummer but the same aural experimentation as their debut.
Side one is studio stuff with entries from keyboard whiz Joe Zawinul, sax man Wayne Shorter and bassist Miroslav Vitous. “Second Sunday in August” was my fave. The Shorter composition “The Moors” features some steallar acoustic 12-string from guest Ralph Towner
Side 2 is made up of some live recordings and some extended sound clouds from the musical aces that make up the band.
It’s weird…when you first start hearing this, you may be put off…but if you listen while you’re doing something else…like typing…the music seems to invade your brain and wrap itself around your synapses…and you start to get what it’s all about.
Eric Gravatt & Dom Um Romao are the new percussionists joining Zawinul, Shorter and Vitous. This is not the more poppy “fusion” stuff of their LPs later in the decade. This is spacy stuff. See if you can dig it.
