We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
This will be a new one for most of you…as it was for me when I played it for the first time last week. The 4th album from the English band Caravan was called ‘Waterloo Lily and it’s a joy to hear.
The band is led by guitarist-vocalist Pye Hastings (has there ever been a more British name than that?). But this album was the only one by the band that featured keyboardist Steve Miller (not that Steve Miller). Miller’s contributions to this record are enormous.
Miller is certainly jazzier and that influence melds with the band’s progressive-folk history to produce some really pleasing sounds.
The standouts for me are “Nothing At All”, the medley of “Love In Your Eye” and the title track.
This sounds like Traffic mixed with Steely Dan, the Kinks and splash of Jethro Tull. If you like any of those bands…I think you’ll dig this.
