We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
Some say it’s their best studio album. I like “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” more but I can understand the love for “Sailin Shoes”, the second Little Feat LP which was released in 1972.
Lowell George, Bill Payne and company have made a more accessible record than their debut and gives you a good idea what the band is all about.
It’s a heady mixture of rock, blues & country led by the tasty slide guitar from George, Payne’s keyboard stylings and a solid rythmn section of Roy Estrada on bass and Richie Hayward on drums. Estrada would leave after this record.
George writes most of the songs with the highlights being “Easy To Slip” (which sounds like Poco and I mean that in a good way) , “A Apolitical Blues”, and the bluesy action of the title track. They also do a band rendition of “Willin” which appeared as a George solo effort on the band’s debut and also give us the first recorded versions of “Cold, Cold, Cold” and “Tripe Face Boogie” and although I like the re-record versions on “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now” better, these certainly are of higher quality than much of the music that was out in 72. Plus the album cover art is groovy, man!
This band and their leader may have been too “something” for mainstream success…but those who know, know. Little Feat was one of the best bands of the 1970s…and for my money, one of the best bands in rock history.
