WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A black bear has been spotted wondering in the Wausau area this week.
Police say at least one person has captured images of the animal on their home security cameras, prompting a nearby school to be kept inside for the day as a precaution.
Black bear attacks on humans are rare but do happen. According to the North American Bear Center, 750-thousand black bears on the continent kill less than one person per year on average.
Officers say if you see the animal you’re encouraged to make loud noises such as yelling at it or banging pots and pans together. An air horn can also work to ward off a bear visit. If the animal refuses to leave or is showing other strange behavior, you’re asked to call either the USDA Wildlife Services office or the Wisconsin DNR.
