We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
They called him the “Hardest Working Man In Show Business” and by 1972 James Brown had already released 32 albums. #33 was called “There It Is”.
If you only know Brown from this….
it’s time to branch out….
Lots of goodness and some cloying anti-drug monologues on this one. The standout tracks for me are “Talking Loud & Saying Nothing”, “I Need Help” and the title track. “I’m A Greedy Man” brings some giggles and “Who Am I” is a slow-jam for a change of pace.
The band is tight and Brown’s signatures yowls are intact. The anti-drug messages in “King Heroin and ‘Public Enemy #1” are a bit heavy handed but you have to give him credit for at least acknowledging the scourge that was making it’s way through his fan base. Of the two, “Public Enemy” fares better.
The album went #10 on the R&B charts and #60 on the Top 200.
I’m pretty sure this didn’t get played in Central Wisconsin so if this is your first taste…enjoy.
