The Wausau Schools Board of Education will take up a revision to the previously proposed human growth and development curriculum update during Monday’s meeting.
The proposal, put forward last month, had scratched language that would have required all curriculum to include education on the use of condoms and other FDA-approved barrier methods for birth control.
Many in the community lashed out against the board after the language became public. Though the board emphasized that removing those lessons was never their plan or intention. Instead, the language came from the board’s consulting group, who was re-writing things to comply with state standards for teaching the process for surrendering a child that the parents feel they can’t care for.
Additionally, the board will hold further discussions on developing a new charter school that would emphasize learning in the outdoors for grads 4K through 4th. Those proposing the plan say indoor learning would still occur, but lessons would emphasize hands-on learning.
It would be the second alternative-learning school in the district alongside the Montessori Charter School.
The district is also scheduled to approve bond sales, bid timelines, and other processes associated with building upgrades and improvements included with the recently-passed referendum.
Monday’s meeting begins at 5 PM and will be held at the Nicholson Board Room. There will also be a live stream available on the district’s YouTube page.
