Wausau residents that have taken advantage of free water filters and pitchers designed to remove PFAS contamination from their drinking water may get some additional filters from the city as well.
Wausau’s Finance Committee and Common Council are both scheduled to consider spending an additional $200,000 in ARPA funds to buy extra filters for residents that may have already gone through the two they’ve already received.
The city has already spent some $230,000 on bottled water, filters, and pitchers which have been distributed to residents free of charge.
In a memo provided to the Committee as part of Tuesday’s agenda, Public Works Director Eric Lindman says there are some 2,000 pitchers and filters that have yet to be claimed, despite several attempts to contact residents. He estimates the value of those at around $80,000.
Residents got one filter and pitcher along with a replacement filter in their initial round from the city. According to ZeroWater, the company that made the filters, two filters will remove contaminates from up to 80 gallons of water.
The agenda doesn’t specify how many additional filters residents would get as part of the package.
Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting begins at 5:30. The matter is then scheduled to immediately move to the city council meeting one hour later.
