WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Winds above 60 MPH caused significant damage in the Wausau area Wednesday morning, and residents should brace themselves for more as the day goes on.
The heaviest storm damage occurred on Wausau’s west side and in the Rib Mountain area at around 4 AM, where numerous trees were knocked down and thousands of WPS customers were without power.
Outages peaked at nearly 9,000 customers at 9 AM Wednesday Most of the outages are in Wausau; others are scattered in rural areas including Stettin, Texas, and Hewett.
As of noon around 3,500 customers in Wausau were still in the dark.
Another round of severe weather is possible for central Wisconsin this afternoon. The National Weather Service’s storm prediction model has increased the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms in Central Wisconsin to “moderate,” or level 4 on a five-point scale. Storms are likely to fire between 3 PM and 11 PM.
The greatest risk involves tornadic activity along with damaging wind and hail.
