A formal groundbreaking is scheduled for the new Great Northern Distilling facility in Stevens Point Friday morning.
The spirits producer is working on a new production facility and tasting room, scheduled to open in the fall of this year.
Great Northern began in Plover in 2013 but recently lost their lease, combined with a desire for more space sent them to Point where they take over the former Belke Lumber site on Second Street.
They purchased the land for $1 and will receive some public money for the project as certain construction milestones are hit. The finished building will go on the tax rolls for no less than $1.5 million.
The ceremonial turning of the dirt was originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon but was postponed as severe thunderstorms moved through Central Wisconsin.
We’ll have more on this story from the owners of Great Northern including their vision for the project later today both on-air and online.
