MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced the depopulation of a Langlade County deer farm after some animals tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
The farm was put in quarantine and depopulated in late 2021. DNR officials conducted testing on all of the remaining carcasses, none of which came back positive for CWD.
According to the DWD, the farm’s owner will receive indemnity payments from the government for the killed animals. No deer will be allowed on the property for the next five years, and the grounds must remain fenced off.
Chronic Wasting Disease is a fatal neurological disease among deer, elk, and moose that can easily spread while the animals are in close quarters. Testing for CWD is only possible after the animal has been killed.
