STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza is encouraging residents to check on each other as a two-day heat advisory grips Central Wisconsin.
“Stay out of the sun if you can and stay in an air-conditioned area if available,” said Wiza. “If you have elderly neighbors or maybe just neighbors that you know, it’s a good idea to check on them to make sure they are OK and that they are staying hydrated.”
The City has partnered with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) to open a cooling center at Lincoln Center on Water Street until 4:30 Monday and again from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM on Tuesday. A cooling center will also be located in the Community Room at 933 Michigan Avenue from 7 AM to 4 PM on both Monday and Tuesday.
Wiza says the city is also waiving bus fares both days for anyone who needs to get out of the heat for a while or who may need a cool ride to the store. Both cooling centers are also located along bus routes.
He adds that residents should remember to not leave people or pets in their cars. Anyone who must work outside should also take frequent breaks and stay well hydrated.
The Heat Advisory runs through 8 PM Monday and temperatures are expected to stay warm on Tuesday.
