STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – Governor Tony Evers has filled a vacancy on the Portage County Circuit Court.
Michael Zell was appointed to Branch 1 because of the retirement of Judge Thomas Eagon.
Zell will fill out the remainder of Eagon’s term through the end of July, 2023. If Zell would like to serve beyond that, he would have to stand for election.
“His breadth of experience, including as both a public defender and a prosecutor, combined with his commitment to a fair and just criminal justice system, make him exceptionally well-qualified for this role,” Evers said.
Zell issued a statement: “Retiring Judge Thomas Eagon was a leader in the legal community through his commitment to excellence, fairness, and justice for all… I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of Portage County.”
Zell has worked as a public defender in Marathon, Wood, and Racine counties. He’s practiced law in Wisconsin for the last 24 years.
