ST PETERSBURG, FL (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays for the second time in 24 hours on Wednesday with another 5-3 win despite a nervous 9th inning by Josh Hader.
The Brewers closer allowed two baserunners before recording three conductive flyouts to nail down his 24th save of the season. Brad Boxberger was the winning pitcher, he threw a near-perfect 7th with two strikeouts and one walk.
Starter Eric Lauer did not factor in the decision. Devin Williams recorded a hold in the 8th.
Christian Yelich and Rowdy Tellez both recorded two hits, including two solo homers for Tellez. Jace Peterson recorded a pinch-hit solo homer in the 9th to provide an insurance run.
The series was the first of several “two games in 24 hours” series for the Brewers this year. The next will come in July when they visit the Twins for two games at Target Field on the 12th and 13th, with Minnesota returning the favor later in the month. They’ll also host the Rays for two more in August, and host the Giants for a doubleheader on September 8th, which is sandwiched in between a road series at Colorado and a home set with the Reds which starts on the 9th.
Milwaukee improves to 44-33 on the season. Their next action comes Thursday when they start a four-game set at Pittsburgh. Coverage of game one begins at 5:35 on WSAU.
