WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Finance Committee has approved a proposal for a $2,000 incentive for city employees to provide a six-month notice for their retirement.
Committee Chair Lisa Rasmussen says it started with a proposal from the city’s Police Department, which was looking for a way to control overtime costs and allow more crossover between new hires and outgoing employees during training.
“There’s value to be had when there is the benefit of a lengthy advance notice,” said Rasmussen. “There’s time for outgoing people to work with new people.”
Alder Doug Diny also sees the proposal as a worthwhile addition to the city’s benefits package and provided the motion for approval.
The proposal did not come with a budget modification since each department has its own salary budget. Rasmussen adds that in some cases, unfilled vacancies could help cover the cost of the early notice bonus.
The Committee passed the measure on a unanimous voice vote during a special meeting on Tuesday. The change applies to all city departments including union members.
The proposal previously passed the city’s HR Committee as well. According to the city’s HR department, some areas could see cost savings due to reduced overtime.
