RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – Ahlstrom-Munksjo is making changes to its Rhinelander facility that are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 14% and landfill waste by more than 50%.
The changes come as the global company aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Addie Teeters is the head of marketing, communications, and public affairs Ahlstrom-Munksjo. She says the company is proud to make sustainable fiber-based products. “We need to ensure that our manufacturing processes also model this idea. Obviously, papermaking is very capitol intensive. We use energy, water, raw materials, but we need to use those more efficiently and using cleaner energy in order to reduce emissions intensity.”
Changes to the Rhinelander papermill include converting the coal-fired boilers to natural gas. It will also be putting in a heat recovery steam generator. “All of these different implementations, again, are going to help reduce not only CO2 emissions, but also landfill waste. The numbers are still kind of a projection right now, but it will be very interesting to see how this quantifies after installation,” Teeters said.
Ahlstrom-Munksjo is also making changes to its Mosinee plant to reduce carbon emissions. The changes at that plant are expected to reduce the carbon footprint by an estimated 20% and landfill waste by more than 10%.
Both projects are expected to be finished by the end of next year.
