WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Another setback has delayed the start date for Wausau’s new drinking water treatment plant.
According to a statement from Public Works Director Eric Lindman, this time it’s a quality control issue. Around 350 primed and coated ductile iron fittings had their factory-applied coatings fail and fall off.
Contractors were able to address the issue on-site, but because of the issue testing and other construction jobs had to be put on hold. Due to the delays, the substantial completion date for the project is now penciled in for October 4th.
Lindman adds that the contractor has taken care of the issue per their agreement with the city, and the city has been compensated for the delay.
This marks the second time that the public works department has announced a delay in the completion of the project. One month ago Lindman told the Water Works Commission that they were looking at a six-week delay on the project due to a construction issue, which wasn’t a surprise to many on the Commission given the size and scope of the project.

The facility is about 90% complete, and Lindman adds that water is flowing through the plant to allow them to test the dozens of processes and elements that must be cleared before they can begin to distribute water to customers from the plant.
