We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
If you like harmony singing, acoustic guitar and tasty mandolin, you’ll love “Summer Breeze” the 4th LP from the duo of Jim Seals and Dash Crofts.
The album was a huge breakthrough for them and included their first two big hits…’Hummingbird” and the title track…both beautiful tunes.
But there is much more to like here. The players are the cream of the LA session cats including Joe Osborn, Wilton Felder, Harvey Brooks, Russ Kunkel, King Errison, Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, John Guerin, Jim Horn, Larry Knechtel, Michael Omartian and Louie Shelton. And some lush strings from Marty Paich.
But they never overshadow the guitar & fiddle of Seals, the mandolin of Crofts, and the soaring harmonies of both.
The two were followers of the Baha’i faith and many of the lyrics deal with themes from that scripture. Some highlights include “East of The Ginger Trees, “Fiddle In The Sky”, “Advance Guards” and the funky ‘Yellow Dirt”.
This LP is a winner.
I’m off tomorrow so the next musical blog will be Monday.
Also, I will be doing my annual WWSP 90FM reunion airshift today from 2-6pm, featuring all music from 1972. You can listen in if you are so inclined at 90fm.org or the Tune In app.
