MADISON, WI (WSAU) — It’s barely worth the paper it’s printed on but it certainly makes a good preseason talking point as well.
The Associated Press released the Preseason Top 25 on Monday, and once again Alabama was named the overwhelming favorite this year with 54 of 63 first-place votes.
Ohio State was picked second and received six first-place votes. Georgia, the defending national champions, picked up the final three and sits 3rd. Clemson and Notre Dame round out the top five.
Other ranked Big Ten teams include Michigan at #8 and Michigan State at #15. Wisconsin was picked 18th.
Minnesota, Purdue, and Iowa all received votes. Nebraska, who hasn’t won more than six games in a season since 2016, received one ballot point (a 25th-place vote).
Wisconsin opens the season with FCS foe Illinois State out of the Missouri Valley Football Conference on September 3rd. Coverage begins at 4 PM on WSAU.
The AP Top 25 is considered the major ranking metric for the first half of the season. The College Football Playoff selection committee will begin their rankings on November 1st, with updated rankings to be released every Tuesday thereafter until November 29th.
The final rankings will occur after Championship Weekend on Sunday, December 4th which is when the four-team playoff bracket will be announced and the rest of the Bowl Game invites will be confirmed.
