MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Taylor County deer farm has been depopulated an animal on the property tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
According to the state Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection, a total of 238 animals living on the property were put down, and 61 of those tested positive for the disease.
The depopulation was the result of a 2001 incident in which a whitetail deer tested positive. DATCP immediately quarantined the farm, meaning no live animals or whole carcasses were allowed to move to or from the 22-acre property.
The farmer will receive federal indemnity for the animals, and will not be allowed to have any other deer or hoofed mammals on the property for another five years. The property will be subject to regular inspections and must maintain all fencing.
Chronic Wasting Disease is a deadly infection for deer. moose, and elk which impacts the animal’s brain. it is highly contagious, and the only way to test for it is by examining the deceased animal’s brain.
