STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Stevens Point City Council has voted to put four transportation projects on the November ballot for voters to decide.
The council passed all four measures unanimously, with some Alders expressing gratitude for the city finally getting to some long-awaited projects that residents have been asking for.
Mayor Mike Wiza said two projects- a reconstruction of Minnesota Avenue and resurfacing project that touches multiple streets in the area of McDill Pond, were already on the city’s radar for 2023. Two others involve potential development projects that the city is working on.
Wiza did not disclose specifics about the projects but did say the city is getting close to finalizing development agreements. “We can’t afford to wait six months. The next opportunity to go to referendum would be in April, and it is likely that we will need to move on these projects before [then]. So we are forced to put them on the November ballot.”
The four projects going before voters include:
- Construct a railroad sidetrack in the area of Burbank Road to Brilowski Road including all necessary equipment at a cost of about $4.1 million
- Construct an extension of Badger Avenue from EM Copps Drive to County Highway HH at a cost of about $1.8 million- including stormwater and sidewalk infrastructure along with landscaping.
- Reconstruct Minnesota Avenue from Clark to Jefferson, Algoma Street from Minnesota to Texas, and Texas Avenue north to Jefferson at a cost of about $1.9 million- curb, gutter, and sidewalk are included with this project
- A large street resurfacing project near McDill Pond encompassing Bush Street, Indiana Avenue, Channel Drive, and portions of other nearby streets for $2.2 million
Mayor Wiza noted that the deadline to put referendum questions on the November ballot is Tuesday, hence a special meeting to finalize the questions.
Anyone who has questions about the projects is asked to contact either the Mayor’s office or their Alder for more information.
