STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A man who broke into an apartment while armed with a rifle was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
Justin L. Salazar, 31, was in Portage County Court on Tuesday.
During the break-in last September Salazar threatened a resident, and fired twice. No one was injured. He was convicted of first degree recklessly endangering safety while armed with a dangerous weapon and armed burglary.
During the break-in, the robbery victim was sleeping. The resident woke up to Salazar standing in front of him holding the rifle. There was a struggle, and the rifle discharged twice into the ceiling. Salazar fled, and was arrested at his residence. Police recovered the weapon there.
After five years of initial confinement, he’ll be on extended supervision for another eight years. Upon release, the defendant will be required to get alcohol and drug counseling, anger management, remain absolutely sober, according to a press release from Portage County District Attorney Office. As a convicted felon, he will be prohibited from possessing a firearm for life.
