CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Joe Biden gave a speech last week on ‘The Battle for the Soul of America.’ It was thick with irony.
Right around now, the people who make up the soul of America are arriving at the jobs. The soul of America is working men and women who labor for a paycheck and stand on their own two feet.
The soul of America looks to themselves to solve their problems, not the government.
The soul of America wants to be free of as many government mandates as possible. The soul of America hasn’t forgotten how the economy was shut down, and how schools and churches were closed. We haven’t forgotten how heavy-handed our government was. How the Supreme Court was the only thing that stood between a jab and our jobs. And who called us ‘the enemy’ if we didn’t aquiesce.
The soul of America has its roots in every corner of the world. We celebrate people, including our own ancestors, who came here legally. We recoil at the lawlessness at our southern border. And we are very aware of who is allowing that to happen.
The soul of America repays money it borrows.
The soul of America wants the rule of law. Low bail, no bail, and revolving-door justice scares us. So does a vice president who raises bail money to put violent protesters back on the streets.
The soul of America is puzzled by the special privileges of the political class. Our children don’t tag along on Air Force Two on foreign business trips, trading on their father’s name and title.
And the soul of America believes in settling its differences at the ballot box, through free and fair elections. We believe in accurate voter rolls. And ballots are counted fairly. And where the voters decide who is and isn’t qualified for office; certainly not where the party in-power targets the most likely candidate of the opposing party for criminal prosecution.
Joe Biden would not know the soul of America if it hit him in the head when he falls off his bicycle. Or if it was whispered in his ear by the Easter Bunny.
Chris Conley.
