NEW YORK, NY (WSAU) — Major League Baseball passed some huge rule changes that will take effect in 2023.
The biggest two include the banning of “the shift” and a pitch clock to help speed up games.
Beginning next season teams will have to employ two infielders on each side of 2nd base and with both feet on the dirt. The position of defensive players is reviewable and the offensive team can take the result of the play of have an automatic ball called.
The pitch clock will force pitchers to deliver a pitch within 15 seconds with the bases empty and 20 seconds with runners on. Pitchers will also be limited to two pick off attempts per plate appearance.
It was also decided to expand the size of the bases to help encourage more stolen bases.
The rules are expected to not only decrease the length of games and but also make games more enjoyable to watch for fans.
