We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
It was another one of those albums trying to capitalize on the popularity of the old blues men with the young British rock stars of the day. “The London Muddy Waters Sessions” found the old man in great voice and he delivers some stinging slide licks throughout the program.
He joined by the likes of Steve Winwood, Ric Grech, Georgie Fame , Mitch Mitchell and Sammy Lawhorn. Also Cary Bell Harrington handles the harp work and delivers some great stuff. And Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher, who was on his way to an outstanding solo career plays on three tracks including some great solo work on “Young Fashioned Ways”. That was one of four Willie Dixon songs that they attacked. They also did three Waters originals including “Who’s Gonna Be Your Sweet Man” and a nice slow burn on “Sad, Sad Day”
I also liked the horn drenched shuffle “I’m Ready” and their take on William Weldon’s “I’m Gonna Move To The Outskirts of Town”.
This album won the Grammy for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording.
Its a solid addition to the blues catalog.
