CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – I wasn’t the intended audience for this TV commercial. A soccer match was being preempted by a Badgers football game. Some of the commercials were intended for the soccer audience.
The commercial was for the U.S. Women’s National Team. It was built around theme “We are…” The visuals showed team highlights. The narrator said, “We are… tenacious. We are… competitors. We are… fighters. We are… champions. We are the U.S. National Women’s soccer team.”
All of which sounds fine. Until you see the visuals. In one short clip, the team is wearing its rainbow pride jerseys. In another, they’re wearing Black Lives Matter gear. The final clip shows the team’s most recognizable player, Megan Rapinoe, who cannot bring herself to stand for The Star Spangled Banner.
Well, I’m not down for any of the team’s causes. Nor are millions of Americans. Part of the pride rainbow agenda is that biological men should be allowed to play on women’s teams. It’s overwhelmingly unpopular among the American public, especially female athletes. I’m a political opponent of Black Lives Matter. Should people be treated fairly regardless of their skin color? Of course. But BLM has a political agenda that I disagree with, which includes reparations, low bail-no bail, defund the police, and using street violence to advance their causes.
Megan Rapinoe, a very talented player, is deplorable. Some teammates say she’s bullied others into kneeling during the playing of the national anthem. She appears to be embarrassed or ashamed of the country she represents through her athletic skills.
How about a women’s national team that is inclusive enough to recognize that we are a country full of people with different opinions on the issues of the day? How about a team that represents all of us?
