CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – The 42nd Never Forgotten Honor Flight took off earlier this morning. It’s a day in Washington D.C. where veterans from our area get to tour the monuments and memorials that honor their service.
I went on one of these flights years ago. It is still one the most memorable days of my broadcasting career. And the highlight was a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, the Old Guard, stands vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Qualifying as a Tomb Guard is among the most selective duty in the United States armed forces. They are dedicated to honoring fellow soldiers who have laid down their lives for our country. The tomb guards are meticulous in their personal appearance and how they do their duty. They are men and women of honor.
What does this have to do with Wisconsin’s race for governor?
Tim Michels served in the 3rd U.S. Infantry, the unit that guards the tomb and serves at military funerals at Arlington. The Army confirms that he screened, selected and trained the soldiers who were chosen for this service. When he left the military, he achieved the rank of major.
Michel’s is not the perfect candidate for Governor. The time he spent living in Connecticut and New York is a weakness. There are new attack ads about female employees being harassed at his family’s construction company. Those ads are misleading. Pat Michels, Tim’s brother, is the company’s CEO. Harassment in the construction industry is widespread, in part because upper management doesn’t have direct control over what happens at job sites.
I’ve become convinced that Tim Michels is a person of integrity. Attack ads that suggest otherwise are inaccurate, and, in my judgment, are ineffective.
