MINOCQUA, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – The two candidates vying for the 7th U.S. Congressional Debate took the stage at Lakeland Union High School on Tuesday.
Republican Representative Tom Tiffany is running for reelection. Democrat Dick Ausman is challenging him.
The two answered questions from high school students for nearly 90 minutes.
The topics ranged from abortion and same sex marriage to hyper local issues like lack of daycare options and the wolf hunt.
One of the questions centered on school safety. A local man was arrested earlier this year. He was accused of making threats to school staff in the area and had bought an assault rifle that day. Tiffany said he supports funding for schools to put in safety measures like bullet proof glass. “I think that’s one thing… that may want to act out on something like this that they’re getting they need.”
Ausman also says making building improvements for safety is important. But he wants gun safety laws as well, including limiting the number of bullets in clips and universal background checks.
Tiffany says he opposes Red Flag Safety laws because they use the presumption of guilt.
