CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) Something unusual is happening in Iran. You won’t hear it from the mainstream media, or from feminists or the Biden Administration.
Masha Amini was arrested by Iran’s religious police. At the time she was in a car, being escorted by her brother. Her crime: Her Hijab was too loose, not fully covering her hair and arms. She was beaten. There are witnesses who say she was hit in the head. She died three days later. Iran’s official statement is that she had a heart attack.
This is the equivalent of someone telling a woman in the United States that the top button on her blouse is undone. And it is a bastardization of Islamic law. The only thing the Quran says is that women are to dress modestly. Head-to-toe body coverings are a construct of Muslim men, not the instructions of their faith. And we’ve learned that Iran’s morality-enforcers are hated.
Protests have continued since Amini’s death. Some women are refusing to cover themselves; others are cutting their hair and wearing makeup. Rioters have set government buildings on fire.
Iran has recalled its ambassador to the UK because of the media coverage of the riots. (They didn’t get the memo about freedom of the press in the West.) Norway has filed a United Nations civil rights complaint. Where is the U.S. on all of this? Our media coverage has been almost non-existent. The Biden Administration has had no official statement.
What’s going on here?
President Biden still hopes to revive the Iran nuclear deal. Billions in assets would be unfrozen, and Iranian oil would ease supply shortages and lower gas prices. And that’s all it takes to silence the media, the feminists, and the President. The women of Iran should keep quiet and keep covered… we need the oil.
