FT. MEYERS, FL (WSAU) — A Wausau trucker is on his way home after dropping off a 53-foot trailer full of supplies for victims of Hurricane Ian in southwest Florida.
Greg Baer dropped a load of non-perishable items including food, clothing, and pet supplies into the area.
He says the load included a donation of dog food along with water and other items that did not require refrigeration. He says all the items were accepted with open arms as many of the residents he met have been left with nothing. “They don’t have the basics. They don’t have forks, knives, or cups. They don’t- they don’t have anything. It’s just gone.”
Desptite that he says everyone he met was in good spirits and thankful for the donations.
Baer says the idea was born the same way so many others have been- during a conversation with friends over a beer. “We were sitting there and [my friend] was wanting to do this fundraiser- wondering how to get the items down [to Florida.] Well, my wife said ‘we have a truck.’
“That’s how it got started,” he said with a laugh.
Baer says it’s a 23-hour drive from Wausau to the southwest coast of Florida. He began his return trip to Central Wisconsin Tuesday evening.
