WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Registration is now open for one of the biggest 5K events in Wausau each year.
The Turkey Trot will be held Thanksgiving Thursday, November 24th with a new route and starting point says Ben Lee with the United Way of Marathon County.
“We will run down the river walk this year,” said Lee. “We worked with the police department and the city on how we could highlight that. So instead of coming straight down 5th like we used to, we come down 3rd and then Fulton connects to the river walk. We’re really excited about that.”
The race will also have a new start/finish line in the 400 Block.
The race is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Marathon County Hunger Coalition, which helps provide food to those who are struggling in the area. He says they do their best to support local businesses and producers as well.
“I would say 95% of those funds stay local. We invest in local farms, we invest in local grocers, and we work really closely with our partners at the Neighbor’s Place and some of our other local pantries,” he said.
The race is also dog and stroller friendly for those who want company while they participate. Lee does ask that if you bring a dog to begin the race at the back of the line to keep your pooch from getting spooked by runners passing by.
Registration is $25 between now and the end of the month. It goes to $30 in early November and $35 the week and day of the race.
To sign up and see this year’s route visit the official race website. Lee notes that you can also bring a food donation to the event or bring a donation when you pick up your race packet on Wednesday.
