WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Shane Blaser issued a proclamation last week to recognize White Cane Day, which raises awareness for the needs of blind and low-vision people who are using the city sidewalks and crosswalks to get around town.
“Making sure people realize that there are people out there that are visually impaired, be aware of that white cane with red markings on it,” said Blaser. “They are still using the sidewalks and crossing the streets. so be aware of the white can and yield to them, let them have the right-of-way, and [let them] get across the street.”
Officially, White Cane Day is observed on October 15th. Blaser says he was made aware of the day by a resident who says she’s had several close calls with cars while trying to get around on sidewalks in the city, and she knows other blind or low-vision people that have as well.
Blaser says for now the proclamation doesn’t come with any other action, as the city is already in compliance with all ADA and state regulations regarding access for sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. He does want it to be a reminder to residents to be aware of pedestrians using the long, white canes and give them space when appropriate.
“It’s more about making people aware that those with white canes are visually impaired. It’s just educating people,” he said.
