WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A world-renowned food historian and one of TIME Magazine’s most influential people of 2021 will speak in Wausau and Stevens Point next week.
Jessica B Harris is scheduled to give two different lectures next Tuesday and Wednesday as part of the 120-year anniversary of the UWSP Family and Consumer Science Program. Susan Turgeson says the topics will include little-known facts about how American cuisine is connected to Africa. “Most of us don’t know the background, don’t recognize how much of what we eat really stems from the African continent.
“She will be infusing history along with the food information,” added Turgeson.
Harris’ schedule includes discussions on both the Wausau and Stevens Point campuses of UWSP:
- Tuesday, Oct. 25 – “Hawkers to Caterers to Restaurateurs: Pathways to Wealth in the African Atlantic World” at James F. Veninga Theater, UW Center for Civic Engagement, UW-Stevens Point at Wausau
- Wednesday, Oct. 26 – “Same Boat Different Stops: Culinary and Cultural Connections in the African Atlantic World” at Michelsen Hall, Noel Fine Arts Center, UW-Stevens Point
The events are free but registration is required at bit.ly/jessicabharrisuwsp. Some of Harris’ books will be available for purchase and signing.
In addition to being named one of last year’s most influential people by TIME, Harris is also a James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Her most recent book, High on the Hog, is the basis for a Netflix series as well.
