We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
It really didn’t matter who was in the band as long as Kim Simmonds brought his ax. The English band Savoy Brown reliably delivered slabs of blues-rock music through the 70’s and beyond (still playing today, I think) including 1972’s “The Lions Share”.
Dave Walker sings and Paul Raymond bangs the keys but it is Simmonds guitar that stands out on this set. From the slide pyrotechnics on the opening number “Shot In The Head” to some killer solos on “Second Try” and “The Saddest Feeling” Simmonds can claim a place in the British blues-rock pantheon of that era.
They cover Howlin Wolf’s “Howlin For My Darlin” and Little Walter’s “I Hate To See You Go” and Simmonds writes a couple of good ones including the aforementioned “Second Try and ” So Tired”.
Walker even writes a rocker worthy of Chuck Berry with “Denim Demon”.
It’s meat and potatoes blues-rock from the British Isles. Tap a pint of bitters and rock on!
