MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — Don’t expect much in the way of big street projects in Mosinee next year.
Mayor Brent Jacobson says they’ll likely sit out much of 2023 due to a lack of funds for bigger projects. But that will pick up in ’24 thanks to some money from the state that’s coming in for a project on Main Street.
“We’re looking to resurface a large section of our Main Street from where State Highway 153 ends through to the edge of our community,” said Jacobson. “That will be a major undertaking, but we were able to get a state-city cost share with that.”
That’s a grant program that will see the state pick up a percentage of the costs but Jacobson says that still leaves a lot for the city to pay for. That means they’ll be bonding, not borrowing, for their portion of that project. Meaning it’ll make more sense to roll more projects into that year than to spend the money in 2023. “You’re taking out a larger amount of money so that’s an opportunity for the city to rope in other, smaller street projects. If we are going to be doing some large borrowing already then we can get some smaller projects roped into that.
“So I think 2024 will be a busier year for street construction. Next year- not so much,” he added.
He notes the city is in good shape thanks to some help from the state to resurface Highway 153 and an adjacent city street.
Jacobson notes that the city budget for next year remains a work in progress and like many other communities he expects theirs to be tight. Though it’s too soon to tell how taxpayers will be impacted as they are still waiting for information from the state on general state aid and general transportation aid. “Those are our two biggest, number two and number three, sources of revenue, behind property taxes.”
It’s important to note that the city portion is one-quarter of the local tax bill. The other pieces include Marathon County, the Mosinee School District, and Northcentral Technical College. Residents can expect to have a better picture of their tax bills by mid-November, with the bill in hand by mid-December.
