WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Tuesday marked the first day for in-person, absentee voting across Wisconsin including in Wausau.
Mayor Katie Rosenberg says those who want to get their ballots in early can do so at City Hall for the next two weeks during regular business hours. Those who take advantage should expect the same experience they would at their polling place on election day proper.
“You’ll need to bring an ID, and you can register on the spot,” said Rosenberg. “It is a partisan election but you can vote for whatever candidates in whatever race that you want.”
After you’ve filled out your ballot and sealed it in the envelope, you will have to fill out your address information and have a witness sign it, which will be done by an election worker. You’ll then turn your ballot over to the clerk’s office, who will keep it locked up until election day when it will be counted.
Rosenberg says those who had their absentee ballot mailed to them can drop it off at the Clerk’s office during business hours as long as the ballot is in their name. You cannot drop off a ballot for someone else, even if they live in the same house as you or are related to you unless there’s a special circumstance. With two weeks to go before the election, mailing your ballot also remains an option.
It’s also important to remember that dropboxes will not be used. If you’re returning your ballot to the Clerk’s office, you must do so during staffed hours. Wausau has converted its former ballot dropbox into a box for municipal payments.
Rosenberg says absentee voting hasn’t been as popular as it was two years ago. Two weeks before the 2020 Presidental election she said the clerk’s office had processed over 10,000 ballots. This time around the number is closer to 4,000 as of Monday.
Voters are encouraged to visit the myvote.wi.gov website to check their voter registration status and polling place before November 8th.
