WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A special Veteran’s Day Program will be held Monday at UWSP Wausau featuring a noted Veteran, author, and Paralympic athlete.
Melissa Stockwell will speak at 6:30 PM at the UW Center for Civic Engagement on Stewart Avenue in Wausau. She enlisted in the Military following the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001 and served in Iraq, where she lost a leg after her vehicle hit a roadside bomb.
Stockwell will also be signing copies of her book “The Power of Choice” following the lecture.
Colin Hanson helped organize the event, which he says is aimed at honoring women in service. He says he also hopes to reach those who may be struggling to help them see the power of choosing to rise above. “Looking at her as inspiration for how to find a silver lining, or turn something negative into a positive like she has.”
“We want to bring a special story to make Veteran’s day a special opportunity to not only say thank you to our local Veterans that have served or are serving,” he added.
Hanson says he also plans to bring more Veterans speakers to the area in the future to tell their stories of service and life after serving as a way to highlight their service and inspire others.
