WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of fraudulent phone calls being made to voters.
Several people say they’ve received calls from someone who asks them who they will vote for during Tuesday’s election. The caller then says that the recipient’s polling place will be closed on election day. Marathon County Clerk Kim Trueblood says you should hang up on these calls for two reasons.
“No election official will ask who you are voting for,” said Trueblood. “All polls in Marathon County will be open as normal from 7 AM to 8 PM.”
Trueblood says anyone with questions about where they should vote can check the myvote.wi.gov website or call their local clerk.
Trueblood adds if there were a reason to move a polling location due to some sort of emergency, that notice would come from official channels such as the county Emergency Manager.
“There is a process to go through and the timeframe for that is well past,” said Trueblood. “If there were an emergency situation we would notify voters through the proper channels and let them know where their new polling place is.”
Marathon County residents who receive one of these calls are asked to report it to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office by calling 715-261-1200. Public Information Officer Sara Severson adds that the department has opened an investigation into the calls and charges are likely if they can make an arrest.
