There are a couple of reasons to tune in to tonight’s Wausau City Council meeting.
First off the Council will open the floor for a public hearing on the proposed 2023 city budget. According to the summary included with Tuesday’s agenda packet, the tax levy shows a 4.9% increase over 2022. (Budget summary on page 26.)
Later the Council will consider the proposed historic site designation for the John Marshall Elementary school which was proposed by the historic preservation committee. They’ve cited the building’s age and its significance to the neighborhood as a landmark.
But the school district has pushed back on that designation more than once. District leaders said they don’t want to see the building get the designation because of how it could tie their hands when it comes to upgrading the building. They are also concerned with what the designation could mean for the proposed district restructuring, which could involve closing or merging some elementary schools.
Tonight’s council meeting begins at 6:30 PM at City Hall.
