MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The State Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection has confirmed that a deer farm in Lincoln County is under quarantine after one of the animals tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
The National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa confirmed the positive test in a five-year-old buck earlier this week. As a result, the entire deer farm has been placed under quarantine. Staff and veterinarians will now conduct an epidemiological investigation at the facility.
CWD is a fatal, neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose caused by an infectious protein called a prion that affects the animal’s brain, and testing for CWD is typically only performed after the animal’s death. DATCP regulates deer farms for registration, recordkeeping, disease testing, movement, and permit requirements.
