WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wednesday night before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest nights of the year for bar and tavern activity, and that’s not lost on the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Brad Tatro says patrol officers will be paying special attention to signs of impaired driving that night. “We do put emphasis on watching traffic to make sure everyone is proceeding safely,” said Tatro.
His suggestion is for everyone to make a plan before they go out and stick to it. “If your plan is to take an Uber or Lyft or any other rideshare program, have it figured out before you go. That’s going to be your best bet to get home safely. That’s going to be the best way for you to enjoy your night and the days that follow.”
Once you get to your destination he also encourages the designated driver to make it known that they won’t be drinking so the bartender knows to only serve that person water or soda.
He also emphasizes that the consequences of a drunk driving charge are high. First-time offenders can lose their licenses and will be subject to thousands in fines and increased insurance. If you’re jailed for a felony charge, you’ll end up spending several days before you can see a judge. “The Courthouse will be closed on Thanksgiving and the Friday after, and then of course it’s the weekend. So you’re looking at a substantial stay in jail before you get to see a judge,” said Tatro.
Tatro adds they don’t have any extra patrols planned, but those that are on duty Wednesday night have been told to look out for erratic driving or other signs that someone could be under the influence.
Many people who travel home for Thanksgiving see the Wednesday before as a chance to meet up with old friends and catch up, making it the busiest night of the year for bars.
