STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The City of Stevens Point has approved a Business Improvement District, or BID, for its downtown area.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the special funding district is something the group of businesses asked for. Each of them will now make annual financial contributions to a BID fund, which will be used to promote the area and make improvements.
“It’s used strictly for enhancements, improvements, and things like that,” said Wiza. “Put flower pots by the trees, whatever the downtown group thinks that we need to do to bring more people downtown.”
He says the money can also be used for marketing or to sponsor events to bring more people into the area.
The city provided $75,000 to kickstart the fund. All future contributions will come from special assessments on properties located within the district.
Wiza is also looking forward to adding a few electric vehicles to the city’s fleet in 2023. “[It’s something] we could use in our inspection department. Short trips, only within the city; seems like an ideal pairing.”
He says it’s one way the city can lead when it comes to clean energy and reducing its carbon footprint.
