GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – Needing a win to make the playoffs, the Packers lost to the Lions 20-16.
Green Bay ends the season with an 8-9 record.
Trailing by four, Aaron Rodgers was intercepted on a deep ball to Christian Watson with 3:37 left in the game. The Packers would not get the ball back. Detroit converted on 4th and 1 with 1:15 remaining and were able to take a knee and secure the victory.
The Packers managed only one touchdown in the game, on a 13-yard catch by Alan Lazard late in the 3rd quarter. The Packers re-took the lead by 3 on the score. But the Lions answered on the next drive, going 81 yards on a 13-play drive that consumed 8-minutes. Jamaal Williams’ one-yard TD run would put Detroit in the lead for good.
The Packers settled for 3 Mason Crosby field goals in the first half.
The Packers were attempting to end the season with 5-consecutive wins to get the final playoff spot in the NFC. The Lions were playing spoilers, having been eliminated from postseason play when the Rams lost to the Seahawks in overtime.
The Lions won both their meetings against the Packers this year, and finished with a 9-8 record. It’s their first winning season since 2017.
The loss begins another off-season of speculation surrounding the Packers and Aaron Rodgers. It’s unclear if he’ll come back for another season in Green Bay, or if he’ll seek to be traded or retire.
