MADISON, WI and COLUMBUS, OH (WSAU) — The Wisconsin hockey programs went oh-for-two on Friday, with the men falling to the USA Hockey Under-18 national team and the women dropping a conference contest against Ohio State.
The men fell 6-1 in their exhibition contest with the U18s, Cruz Lucius netted the only goal of the game for the Badgers in the second. Kyle McClellan made 16 saves in net before being replaced midway through the third by Ben Garrity.
Wisconsin has two recruits on the USA Under 18 squad who made their Kohl Center debut in the game, Brady Cleveland and Zach Schultz.
Regardless of the outcome, the game doesn’t count for the Badgers. The U18s are now 12-4 on the season against NCAA Division I competition, they also play a limited schedule in the United States Hockey League, the highest level of junior hockey in the nation.
Wisconsin returns to Big Ten play against Ohio State next weekend
The women fell 2-1 in overtime to OSU in Columbus on Friday. Lacey Eden scored the first goal of the game with 3:00 remaining in the first period. Ohio State would tie the game early in the second, and that’s where things stayed through the 60-minute mark.
The Buckeyes then broke the deadlock with under a minute to go in the overtime period.
Cami Kronish made 34 saves in the game.
Wisconsin is now 16-6-1 on the season and 12-4-1 in league play, they’ve lost four in a row and three straight in WCHA play. They’ll look to bust that losing streak this afternoon against the Buckeyes.
