WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A jury trial is underway for Ronnie Lofton Jr, the Wausau man accused of intentional homicide after his infant son died from various injuries.
The 41-year-old is said to have beaten and abused the child while his mother was out shopping. She says she returned home to find him unresponsive. Lofton tried to blame the injuries on another child in the home at the time of the incident, according to police.
Doctors described numerous injuries on the child including bruising and broken ribs. Brain and skull injuries were also present, some of which were consistent with the child being beaten against a solid object.
The boy was placed on life support but later died. Lofton had previously been facing charges of first-degree reckless homicide in the case, but those were later upgraded to intentional homicide.
The ten-day trial is scheduled to run through January 31st. Lofton faces a mandatory life sentence if found guilty on the homicide charge. He’s also facing counts of bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia as well.
