CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – A week later, this story can now be told.
A week ago tonight, I was sitting in my living room when a stranger walked into my home. I’d never seen him before. I have no idea what his intentions were.
I usually leave my doors unlocked. Well, that has come to an end. My quiet residential neighborhood was probably never as safe as I perceived it to be.
I yelled at the top of my lungs at the intruder. And Argos, my Great Dane, sprang into action immediately. The man who tried to enter my home got no more than one step inside the foyer. And the dog was on him. He backed away, closed the door, and fled. If he took one step forward, Argos would have ripped him apart.
I called the police, who arrived almost instantly. One officer interviewed me. Another worked the neighborhood, and found the man up the block and arrested him.
My interaction with the police that night was excellent. The officers were professional and efficient; they did their duty as expected.
And as for my somewhat floppy, occasionally docile dog: an animal may go its entire life and be called on to protect its humans only once or twice, if at all. At a year-and-a-half-old, Argos is still more puppy than dog. And he met the challenge of that night perfectly.
